Principal’s Corner

Dear O. Henry Parents and Community,

It is my pleasure to welcome everyone back for another great year at O. Henry Middle School.  We are getting excited to have students back in classrooms and hallways filled with energy and enthusiasm for learning.  It is our mission to ensure every child feels welcomed, connected, and a part of our O. Henry family. Additionally, in our pursuit of excellence we will challenge each student to grow in academic abilities.

We will be hosting a number of events in the next two weeks to open our doors to our current and incoming students.  This week we kick off Transition Camp and Parent Camp 101.  This year we will also host Mustang Derby where new students can walk the halls before school starts, purchase O. Henry Swag, and their schedule. Please see our website and information included in this newsletter.

We hope you will find our website helpful and informative. All information we send out via email can also be found on this site.  Our weekly newsletters are sent out on Friday afternoon. Additionally we have a Twitter account (@Ohenryms) and a Facebook Page that we will use to send out updates and celebrations throughout the school day.

I am honored to serve as principal and it is truly a privilege to be a part of a community where parents, teachers, and students care for each other, build positive relationships , and support academic and social growth.  Let’s make is another great year at O. Henry Middle School.

Sincerely,
Marlo Malott

Mustang Mall Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers for Mustang Mall!

Mustang Mall is a kiosk in the lunchroom where we sell school supplies and other novelties.  This is an easy, low stress, once-a-month commitment of an hour and a half during the school’s lunch periods, 11:40 AM to 1:10 PM ‬. Volunteering at the mall is a fun opportunity to see your child and his or her friends at lunch. (Incoming sixth grade parents, this can be a great way to see how your child is doing.)

We have a limited number of openings for lunch shifts so we will fill the lunch shifts on a first-come, first-serve basis, so please submit your information as soon as possible if you would like to volunteer. To volunteer, complete the information at this link, Mustang Mall Volunteer Form.   We will contact volunteers by email after we finalize a schedule and will have training once school starts for those new to the mall.

If you have any questions, regarding Mustang Mall, please contact Karen Mauldin, kjmauldin@gmail.com or Jami Knause, at jamiculver@yahoo.com.

TEA study guide excerpts for the TAKS test

Now that the new OHMS site is launched I need to take time to streamline it and speed up the loading time. Two essential tools I’ve discovered to measure, analyze, and diagnose problems with site loading time are Pingdom Tools Full Page Test and Google’s Page Speed Online.

Right now the newly developed OHMS site is posting an embarrassing Page Speed Score of 66 (out of 100) when tested by Google. Page Speed Online offers a tiered set of recommendations for decreasing load time and a comprehensive FAQ.

Pingdom’s test provides the total load time (17.3 seconds over a cable modem, ouch!) and lists every file requested by a browser, graphing the list in a chart to show which items took the longest to load. From their analysis I can see that I have plenty of work to do, starting with not loading ajax libraries three times (!). And how did that 79K image get in there? Quite obviously there were many nights of working on the site long after everyone else was asleep!
